Sixteen Brooksians recently spent the weekend in the heart of Boston simulating members of the United Nations, foreign diplomats, and the world press corp. This is Model UN.

The Boston conference, one of many held throughout the country, is the end result of many weeks of work for students who have prepared to “step into the shoes” of the real United Nations members. Students, according to the MUN website, draft resolutions, plot strategy, resolve conflicts and navigate the procedural rules of the United Nations.

“Before playing out their ambassadorial roles in Model UN, students research the particular global problem to be addressed. The problems are drawn from today’s headlines. Model UN delegates learn how the international community acts on its concerns about peace and security, human rights, the environment, food and hunger, economic development, and globalization,” the MUN website explains.

The Brooks students were among thousands of students attending and had several notable successes. One being Sebastian Alvarez-Martinez ‘18 who earned a verbal commencement in his first committee session ever, not to mention it being a Spanish speaking one! Lami Zhang ‘19, a returning delegate, won best position paper for her committee, Press Corps, the committee in charge of keeping note of the weekend’s events.

This was my second Model UN, and I was pumped to go knowing I would be able to debate subjects that interested me, get to develop relationships with the fellow students attending and get a chance to do something to stretch my comfort level.

The Brooks group stayed at the Boston Park Plaza and when not intensely debating with like-minded students took Chipotle runs and enjoyed the bright lights of the city.
